Tyne clean energy park

Tyne Clean Energy Park

An exciting opportunity to invest in the North East’s most versatile clean energy park at the Port of Tyne.

The Port of Tyne is bringing to market a £150 million development opportunity to meet significant demand from businesses for deep water port access. The development will cover 81 hectares and deliver much needed industrial space to the North East. The development sites are next to deep water quays of up to 13.5 metres. They are close to the mouth of the Tyne, one of only 2 deep water rivers in the north-east of England, with unrestricted beam, height and length.

In 2022, advancing its ambition to become a world-class ‘smart port’, Port of Tyne partnered with BT to install a new 5G private network and other cutting-edge surveillance and smart technology. The installation of 5G allows the port and its customers to take full advantage of advanced technology, including robotics and autonomous vehicles, artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

Sector and market opportunity

The project will involve the development of land and quayside infrastructure to support the growth of the port’s renewable business. This will also include the opportunity for additional operations and maintenance facilities and sites for Tier 1 suppliers to establish pre-assembly and installation activities.

There’s also opportunity for offshore equipment manufacturers to develop new factory facilities on sites that are next to deep water quays.

Location

The development sites are in strategic locations which are close to North Sea offshore wind farms, including Dogger Bank and the nearby Tyne and Wear conurbations. They’re also near to the growth sectors of advanced green energy manufacturing, battery development and electric centres for vehicles.

Connectivity

The port has excellent connections throughout the North East by road and rail. It has a direct Metro rail connection to Newcastle International Airport and direct airline routes to London, Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt and Dubai.

The port is easily accessible by road and less than 1 mile from the A19 which links to the A1 and M1 main arterial road networks.

Local talent and skills

The region benefits from 5 major universities, a highly skilled work force, training colleges and some of the world’s biggest businesses located by the port. The local area is rich in industrial heritage which is a key factor in the success of the port.

Research and expertise

The port is home to the UK’s first maritime innovation hub, delivering cutting-edge solutions with major maritime sector partners. These include Nissan, Accenture, Department for Transport, Drax, Ubisoft and the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult.

Environmental, social and governance (ESG) highlights

This investment is part of the port’s ‘Tyne 2050’ green energy strategy. This commits to be carbon neutral by 2030, a fully electric port by 2040 and to create 10,000 new jobs for the region.

Promoters and partnerships

Port of Tyne operates as the Statutory Harbour Authority for the River Tyne. It also has significant activity in its large estates portfolio covering 250 hectares of land to the north and south of the river.

The port has over 100 tenants, provision of quayside product handling and passenger related activities and its own logistics and road transport operation. It has extensive expertise in delivering similarly sized schemes and is one of the largest deep water ports in the country.

Local and national government support

This project is supported by the North East local enterprise partnership, local authorities and supports the government’s plan for a carbon neutral future.
