Founded in 2005 and headquartered in Cambridge, UK, with regional offices in the USA and Australia, Telensa provides solutions for smart cities.
Telensa has been particularly active in smart street lighting, and has a cumulative project footprint of more than 2 million street light controllers across more than 100 projects around the world, including in New Zealand, Australia, Malaysia, Middle East, continental Europe, Brazil, the USA and Canada. In the UK Telensa products are installed on one in seven of the UK’s streetlights. In Georgia in the US we have one of the worlds’ largest smart street lighting deployments across the state: more than 300,000 in a single system.
Telensa’s PLANet connected street lighting system consists of wireless control nodes (telecells), a dedicated Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) wireless network (city- or utility-owned) and a Central Management System (CMS). As street lighting owners and operators around the world make the transition from legacy sodium lighting to LED, PLANet adds value by providing tools for helping to optimise the energy and maintenance improvements that come with LED street lighting. Whole populations of street lights can be managed entirely from the desktop.
Adding to this investment in smart infrastructure, cities and utilities are increasingly looking at further smart cities capabilities. They are recognising the importance of street lighting, with its ubiquitous and electrically powered presence across a city. Networking street lights together into a system, gives opportunities to add other applications such as traffic analytics, smart waste and air quality monitoring. Telensa provides solutions into this agenda too, such as its smart cities platform named Urban IQ.
