Project background
AMID will create a centre for innovation, research and advanced manufacturing, recognised internationally.
The advanced manufacturing sector has significant potential for growth in Scotland. It accounts for 52% of international exports and nearly 600 million GBP of Scotland’s spend on business research and development.
AMID is supported by significant public sector investment that includes:
- 65 million GBP towards the creation of a National Manufacturing Institute for Scotland
- a 56 million GBP Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre
- 39 million GBP of City Deal funding to provide enabling infrastructure
The project value is between 194 million GBP to 244 million GBP.
About the project
AMID is located 6 miles west of Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland. It offers unrivalled connectivity. It is next to Glasgow International Airport and has direct access to Scotland’s motorways.
AMID is at the centre of Scotland’s biggest labour catchment area and close to established businesses such as:
- Rolls Royce
- Thermo Fisher
- Peak Scientific
- Terumo Aortic
- Doosan Babcock
AMID will add to the University of Strathclyde’s Advanced Forming Research Centre. This High Value Manufacturing Catapult Centre is being enhanced with a £9 million investment in a Lightweight Manufacturing Centre and a 16.5 million GBP ‘FutureForge’ facility. FutureForge will be the world’s most advanced hot-forging research platform when it opens in 2020.
AMID will also be home to two new national innovation centres. These are the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland and a Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre.
The Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre will start the development of Scotland’s advanced manufacturing and life sciences industries. It will provide support for businesses of all sizes and connect all Scotland’s engineering universities and colleges.
This is an example plan of around 150,000 square metres of floor space, with a focus on advanced manufacturing. It also includes life sciences, research and development and aviation services such as maintenance, repair and operations.
The site is ready for investment, with investments phased from 2019 to 2021.
