JAMIE FOBERT ARCHITECTS LIMITED

The ceramic-clad pavilion building and granite-clad light chambers, like rocky outcrops on the nearby cliffs.

New Tate St Ives

Situated on a sensitive site in this small, historic town on the beautiful Cornish coast, the new gallery building is sunk deep into the cliffs, yet it benefits from strong, coastal natural light from above thanks to the insertion of rooflights. The exterior responds to the vernacular architecture of St Ives and the natural forms of the coastline; the generous space and light within belies the discretion of the building’s external form.

The vast 500m2 gallery space allows Tate St Ives to accommodate the varied practices of contemporary art.

The light chambers draw in and diffuse the strong and beautiful light of St Ives.

'For me, the success of this project is based upon Jamie’s ability to listen, to collate and map out the elements of the brief, and to think creatively in the way he brings those elements together ... The way he has created a single 500m2 gallery space, flooded through six chambers of natural light, which can be sub divided into a variety of configurations for different exhibitions, has thrilled our curators as well as the artists associated with the gallery ... The architectural forms he has created internally and externally have had a magical impact.'
