JAMIE FOBERT ARCHITECTS LIMITED

The interiors are elegant yet with a luxurious materiality such as marble and bronze.

Fondaco dei Tedeschi

We redesigned and transformed the interior of the C16th Fondaco dei Tedeschi into a luxurious department store for global retailers DFS, in close collaboration with the soprintendenza of Venice. Our work sits within the architectural restoration of this historic landmark which was carried out by OMA. This major new store, which is 9,000m sq over 5 floors, opened to the public in October 2016.

Our vision was to create a wonderful journey through the building, with each level bringing new images and materials, responding to its historic context, its product range and Venice itself, creating a constant dialogue between old and new.

We wanted to create a playful and exploratory department store with variation and surprise on all levels while also creating an elegant and luxurious interior by using materials such as marble and bronze.

The store has been described by Tatler as "Venice's best attraction" and Wallpaper predicted the it will be "a certified crowd-pleaser".

'Fobert’s room-sets subtly demarcate the stock by brand and category. Lined with handsome timber shelves and flooring, and bubble chandeliers, the spaces flow organically from the outer corridor that looks through the arched loggias into the courtyard, to the inner rooms that are awash with light from windows lining all four sides of the palazzo. And invariably, the eye is drawn along corridors linked with arched doorways, while the struts of the display shelves quietly reference ancient Venetian doorways ... there is every reason to expect the Fondaco to be a certified crowd-pleaser.'
