DARAJA means ‘bridge ‘in Swahili. DARAJA builds bridges to connect the key organisations in the city system, especially the communities, to the national weather agencies.

The DARAJA award recognised UK expertise in international development, infrastructure and capacity building, inspired by the city-systems wide innovation framework of EIT Climate-KIC.

DARAJA has helped the most vulnerable city communities and countries to ease and adapt to the effects of climate change. The climate change in East Africa has seen an increase in floods and heatwaves in recent years.

Residents through DARAJA services now access advanced and accurate weather, early warning and climate information in Kenya and Tanzania’s informal settlements. This has allowed residents to take better preventative action ahead of high impact weather, resulting in both avoided loss and improved livelihoods.
