Nigeria tomatoes - poor standards

GEMS4 /DFID / UKAID - Nigeria Post Harvest Handling Training

It offered recognition of great potential for Tomatoes and Peppers Horticulture sub-sector in Kano, Kaduna and Lagos to drastically reduce the post harvest losses from farm gate to primary collection centre and to secondary markets through improved standards; packing operations from using raffia baskets to plastic baskets and skills training and development for all the key personnel on good post harvest handling practices.
The realisation of the key challenges facing the tomatoes and peppers horticulture sub-sector due to lack of appropriate infrastructure for primary collection centres and packing houses that will enable them to meet basic standards for fresh produce handling.
The need to establish basic collection centres and pack houses at the key locations identified in the pilot areas of Kano, Kaduna and Lagos.
The need to develop the capacity and skills of key personnel for a sustainable project development and management
