RECOVER can reveal fingermarks on metallic items of evidence including bullets, knives, sim cards etc.

Foster+Freeman Licence Innovative New Fingerprint Technology

Unlike existing fingerprint development techniques, that are largely ineffective on fired ammunition, a new vacuum-based fuming technology called RECOVER enables forensic experts to process large batches of discharged bullet casings quickly and effectively. The technique can reveal fingerprint ridge details even when no DNA is present.

Discarded bullet casings returned to the lab for analysis can be quickly and efficiently processed using the RECOVER technique, pre or post ballistics, with the majority of fingermarks (where present) becoming visible after a single process lasting anywhere between 10 and 60 minutes.

Once a fingerprint has been revealed, the evidence can be photographed and searched against using the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS).

Despite being an entirely new technique, RECOVER’s ability to reveal previously ‘impossible’ fingermarks, has made it must-have technology for leading forensic facilities both in Europe and the United States.
