Soil sampling from bags of stored soil materials

Contaminated Soil and Waste from Greek aviation crash

In 2005, a Helios Airways aircraft crashed in Greece following engine fuel starvation. Crash site clean-up and restoration involved the collection of aircraft wreckage, excavation of contaminated soils and subsequent storage of the collected materials. On completion of legal processes, the stored wreckage and soils required appropriate disposal/recovery. In May 2019, PAG Consultancy, were contracted by insurance loss adjusters to advise on a suitable way forward. Waste characterisation, sampling and appropriate laboratory analysis of materials was undertaken, and work conducted with local Greek companies to remove the materials from storage and recycle/dispose of them in accordance with Greek Environmental regulations. The project in Greece, was on the back of a number of aviation loss incidents (e.g. in UK, Estonia and UAE), requiring expert environmental consultancy, which staff at PAG Consultancy were involved in advising on appropriate soil/environmental remediation techniques.
