CO2 Calculator for UK government

A great example of brand driven design, complex functionality and a range of data visualisation techniques
The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) approached Monochrome to design and develop a CO2 emissions calculator, to simulate the effects of changes to energy supply and demands to our national CO2 levels by 2050. As a nation the UK has a CO2 reduction target of 80% by 2050 compared to those levels in 1990.
The design of the calculator should honour Gov.uk brand guidelines where possible and follow GDS service guidelines where appropriate. Whilst the calculator needed to be easy to use, it also needed to present data as accurately as possible to avoid misrepresentation.
The intended audience, including economists, engineers and government accepted that the calculator accurately represented DECC data and forecasting models. The calculator is now widely used and shared by interest groups through various digital and social channels.
The project was a great example of brand driven design, complex functionality and a range of data visualisation techniques

The calculator must appeal to a wide, and varied, target audience

Whilst the calculator needed to be easy to use, it also needed to present data as accurately as possible
