Description

The Wearing Street precinct is a compact site located in Port Noarlunga between Mann Street and the Onkaparinga River.
This unique location adjoins the coastal sand dune system and the bank of the Onkaparinga River/Ngangkiparri. Since the early 1930’s, it has been a popular community attraction and a hub for aquatic sport and recreational activities.
The precinct has predominantly been developed with civil infrastructure and built form including residential and commercial kiosk for many decades.
The current Wearing Street precinct comprises facilities utilised by South Port Surf Life Saving Club, Onkaparinga Canoe Club, Department for Education’s aquatics program, kayak hire operator, public roads, carpark, coastal protection infrastructure (rock revetment wall and access ramp) and amenities. Location details and site area is provided in Section 5 of this document.
Despite its popularity, the site is in a poor state of repair with multiple failing assets which require capital investment to meet current and future community needs. The precinct site has potential to be a gateway statement for those travellers entering Port Noarlunga from the south across the Saltfleet Street Bridge.
Council recognises the unique environment, cultural significance and potential this site offers to the community and has actively engaged with the community and the State Government over an extended period to address the high demand for a high quality ‘premier aquatic destination in the south’.
