The town of Neukirchen-Vluyn is planning to extensively renovate, refurbish and modernize the Niederberg municipal comprehensive school at Tersteegenstraße 85 and 87 in Neukirchen-Vluyn in line with current pedagogical ideas. The aim is to refurbish and modernize significant parts of the comprehensive school, which not only meets current building and operational requirements, but also creates learning islands and recreational areas for an individual and group-oriented learning environment. The disciplines of inclusion and social work play an important role here, as does the consideration of the knowledge gained during the corona pandemic, such as the requirements for the network equipment and the division of the year groups through
targeted partial closures of individual areas. For this purpose, rooms must be relocated and adapted according to requirements. School operations must be maintained during the construction phase. Parts of the building are allocated to the respective year groups. This will allow the needs of the student groups in the relevant year groups to be addressed in a more targeted manner. Even when pandemic-related events are taken into account, dividing up the year groups enables the targeted partial closure of individual areas, while lessons can continue for groups that are not affected. To implement the measure, classrooms will be partially relocated or optimized in their floor plan (enlargement of the room, creation of learning islands). The specialist rooms will also be adapted to the teaching and learning opportunities of the respective year groups. For example, viewing windows and doors are to be installed across all classes in years 5-7. There are also plans to optimize the use of space in the teaching kitchen. This will be brought up to the current state of the art in coordination with the user. By positioning the new teaching kitchens in larger areas, they can also be used as a catering base for events. Formerly in the remote
building wing "B", the teaching kitchen will be relocated to the first floor area, building wing "G" with a direct connection to the foyer area. Structural measures include: Change to the floor plan layout. Structural interventions, thus complex structural planning in the entire building complex. A (at least visual) wayfinding system is also being considered across all buildings to give people who are not familiar with the area a quick overview of the layout of the building sections and to help them find their way around. In this context, the Gütersloh model should also be taken into account and brought into a design context with the overall architecture. The comprehensive school area is also to receive an electronic locking system. To this end, the requirements must be agreed with the user and existing systems at the school center must be taken into account. During the inventory, a number of points have already become apparent that extend the former cost estimate. On the one hand, it was determined that all suspended ceilings need to be replaced, as this is required by the technical building services measures. These include, among other things, the complete renewal of the drinking water network, i.e. the replacement of the pipes or the installation of new cables for the electronics. In addition, the buildings are equipped with a discontinued suspended ceiling model that cannot be retrofitted.
Accordingly, they can only be removed and replaced with new ones once the building services work has been completed. In addition, the room acoustics are poor, which will be improved by using appropriate panels. The refurbishment of the existing buildings B, C and G includes replacing the drinking water network and modernizing the electrics. In addition, the surfaces will be modernized in the form of new wall and floor coverings. In addition, the organization
of the classrooms will be adapted to requirements. Small structural interventions, such as breakthroughs, are planned for this purpose. In addition to the roof renovation, a venetian blind system is planned to improve thermal insulation in summer. Building C will also receive an elevator extension to enable barrier-free access. Furthermore, it was determined that the hourly WCs in buildings B, C and G are outdated and in need of renovation. In building C, the WCs in the north wing have therefore already been brought forward and are already being renovated. Building G is to be extended with extension J. This comprises 3
floors, which contain further classrooms and the IT department. The rooms will be accessed from the respective existing floor. An elevator is also planned. The escape route is via an external fire escape on the south side. The extension will be positioned away from Building G so that the classrooms continue to be supplied with light and fresh air. The extension is constructed from reinforced concrete or reinforced concrete hollow core slabs. This allows the rooms to be freely designed using drywalls, which can also be changed at a later date if the needs of the school change.
The façade will be clad in wood. However, the connecting corridor will be set apart from the extension with sheet metal cladding and a lower height in order to visually separate the old and new buildings. The east façade facing the existing building will be attractively designed. The west and south façades will be greened. The flat roof will also be greened. External blinds will be provided to regulate the amount of sunlight. The fittings include grey aluminum windows and door frames with wood-effect door panels. The linoleum floor coverings are designed to match the color concept. The walls and ceilings will be kept light.
