Description:
The RFP is an invitation to submit offers for The Supply of a High-Frequency Functional Ultrasound, as further described herein.
Assessment of bleed risk using functional ultrasound. Impaired neurological development remains a stubbornly persistent complication of preterm birth. A major contributing factor is the fragility of the cerebral vasculature in the immature brain, making it vulnerable to brain bleeds caused by unstable blood flow. Working with clinical colleagues, as well as experts in ultrasound and neonatal brain imaging, our goal is to develop a robust functional ultrasound (fUS) protocol using the proposed fUS equipment for rapid assessment of blood flow patterns in deep brain ventricular structures where bleeds originate. We will also compare continuous cortical recordings from EEG and fNIRS to determine the relationship between the signals from the different brain regions in preterm neonates. We envision that this approach will enable us to identify cortical patterns that will predict the risk of a bleed developing, thereby enabling corrective changes to patient care. Although our immediate focus is on preterm brain injury, the developed technology would be applicable to other causes of neonatal brain injury such as hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy in term infants.
The high-frequency functional ultrasound (fUS) would be a 256-channel system that has the potential to transform neuromonitoring applications involving infants under critical care. The system enables bedside assessment of cerebrovascular health with the sensitivity to assess deep brain regions most at risk of injury. In essence, fUS provides the bridge between continuous, inexpensive monitoring methods (NIRS and EEG) and the whole-brain coverage of MRI.
