Description

A UK business has approached the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and Department for Business and Trade (DBT) Growth Gateway programme for help identifying suppliers for a solar project in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The business works with the Government of Zanzibar on different initiatives.

The business would like to involve UK companies in providing solar installation for the main airport: Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (AAKIA). The airport is currently dependent on the grid and experiences regular outages.

The business also suggests that UK companies provide solar bids for the new airport to be constructed in Pemba. This project is financed by UK Export Finance (UKEF) and has been highlighted by Minister Huddleston and David Concar. Together with a package for road construction in Zanzibar, the project aims to create £100 million of export opportunities for UK companies from £373 million of financing.

Regarding the solar installation at the main airport, the UK facilitators have had engagement from Kenyan and other non-UK companies, but not yet found UK companies to bid.

The UK facilitators have been asked to gather bids and engage UK companies on the following projects to provide solar for:

  • the main airport (2MWp)
  • new airport (4MWp)
  • water company (4MWp)
  • steel factory (20MWp)
  • nighttime battery (200MWp) for whole island

The UK facilitators are interested in companies with a financing provider who can fund the installation over 5 to 10 years on a lease-purchase basis. If you do not have a financing partner but can bid on installation, please also get in touch. As noted above, financing available may be available; for example, on the Pemba Airport project.
