Description

The Town of Smithers was recently awarded funding from BC Healthy Communities, under the Age-Friendly Communities Program, for undertaking the Age-Friendly Wayfinding Project that intends to support inclusive use of trails by people of all age and abilities. The Town of Smithers is seeking proposals from qualified professional(s) to develop an age-friendly signage template and maps for key trails. The project will have two components: firstly, engaging with stakeholders and residents to identify key trails in the town, and determining trail accessibility for the purpose of creating age-friendly wayfinding signage, and secondly, creating maps and signage that are age-friendly, and highlight the accessibility of key trails in the Town.New signage will be posted at key trails, showing details of trail accessibility, such as the level of difficulty (i.e., trail length, elevation, grade), access to washrooms, and linkages to surrounding areas. These details will enable users to determine suitability of a trail to match their ability and needs and give them the confidence to explore more trails and outdoor spaces. As part of completing the accessibility assessment of trails, the project team will organize a series of guided walks that emphasize safety and building physical strength through walking, and explore ways to use wayfinding to its greatest potential. This project was inspired by the Age-Friendly Wayfinding Project that the Town of Qualicum Beach completed in 2021.Further details are included in the downloadable RFP document.
