Description

With the upcoming plans, the Museum am Rothenbaum is embarking on the largest modernization and structural restructuring process since the museum opened on the Rothenbaumchausee in 1912.
The listed building has a gross floor area (GFA) of approx. 18,000 m² and a usable area (UFA) including circulation area (VFA) of approx. 10,700 m². The areas for the current special and permanent exhibitions add up to approx. 4,300 m². The location and floor layout of the building can be found in the attached documents. For the collection, history, program and current orientation, see MARKK-Museum am Rothenbaum, Kulturen und Künste der Welt www.markk-hamburg.de
The museum has had an average of 60-100,000 visitors in the last ten years. After the modernization, it is aiming for at least 150,000 visitors per year.
With the comprehensive modernization of the museum building and its reorientation in terms of content and structure, its operation will also be fundamentally renewed and adapted to contemporary and future-oriented museum standards. A sustainable structural renewal in keeping with the spirit of the times is intended to transform the museum into a future-oriented and audience-friendly museum of cultures and the arts. The extensive modernization work will include the redesign of the permanent exhibition, the renewal of large parts of the building services and the creation of barrier-free access.
The modernization also includes the creation or revision of the foyer with its ancillary functions, the mediation and education areas, the event rooms, the library, the office space and workrooms, as well as the outdoor facilities on the site.
The building will be closed during construction and the exhibits will be moved to an external storage facility. The relocation planning and its implementation, which is necessary to make the building free for construction, is part of the planning process and part of the overall budget.
