Description
Vessel ballast water discharge represents a significant pathway for the introduction of non-indigenous species (NIS) into marine ecosystems and their translocation throughout New Zealand. International ballast water movements are now managed under the International Maritime Organization Ballast Water Management Convention, which entered into force on 8th September 2017. New Zealand currently has no ballast water discharge requirements for vessels (either international or domestic) exchanging New Zealand-sourced ballast water between domestic ports.
Before a pathway management approach for domestic ballast water can be considered, we need to know the magnitude of domestic ballast water discharges and identify potential management options.
