Description
1. Background: All domesc water at the Fermi Naonal Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) site is supplied by the City of Warrenville. The domesc water then travels through nearly 21 miles of piping to reach its eventual desnaon. The result is “hard” water that requires treatment by water soening units installed throughout the Fermilab property. A total of thirty-two (32) water soeners (see Atachment 1, Water Soener Locaons) are installed at mulple locaons to assist in soening the water to prepare it for a variety of applicaons.
So water is important to certain buildings and laboratories as it is used for humidifiers and cooling for computer centers. Hard water can calcify and clog orifices, causing damage to computer banks. So water is also required for various processes in experiments, loop systems, regeneraon for LCW applicaons, and dish washing.
Preventave maintenance is performed by Fermi Research Alliance (FRA) site mechanics. Correcve maintenance and/or replacement of these units is beyond the scope of site maintenance’s experse. FRA is in need of a subcontractor to be responsible for all correcve maintenance and/or replacement of the site’s water soener units as the needs are idenfied. The subcontractor would also perform installaon of new units in locaons determined appropriate by FRA.

2.5.2. Subcontractor will perform an inspecon to diagnose issues and provide a quote prior to ordering parts and materials needed for repair.
2.6. Replace water soener units when they cannot be repaired.
2.6.1. Replacement may be required due to end of life, gross failure of a unit, or when correcve maintenance costs would exceed the costs of a new unit.
