Understand how to classify your products

All goods exported or imported are classified using the same system of commodity codes. It’s important you know the codes for your goods so you can complete your export paperwork.

Show Hide

The Harmonised System (HS) of commodity codes is internationally recognised and over 98% of all international trade uses the system. Each unique code allows customs officials to identify the goods being traded and ensure the correct duties and tariffs are paid. Classifying your goods incorrectly can lead to delays in transit and additional costs to your business.

Apply for an Advance Tariff Ruling

An Advance Tariff Ruling is a legally binding decision on the classification of your goods. This means your choice of commodity code has been verified and approved by customs officials.

These rulings are particularly useful if you have goods that are difficult to classify and can give you peace of mind that your duties and tariffs are calculated correctly. You can apply online, but you must do this before all customs procedures have been completed and cannot apply retrospectively.
