Exporting guide to Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea is located in the southwestern Pacific and includes the eastern half of New Guinea and its offshore islands. Despite being a small country, it has a population of 8.4 million people (IMF, 2018) and so has a reasonable consumer market for UK exporters.

Strong service market

Of all UK exports to Papua New Guinea in the year up until March 2019, 96.5% were services (ONS, 2019). In 2018, the top goods imported by Papua New Guinea from the rest of the world were business services, transport, travel, construction and insurance and pension services (ITC Trade Map, 2019).

Improving economy

Papua New Guinea has experienced positive GDP growth from 2014 to 2017, and, despite a drop in 2018, is forecast to continue this trend over the next five years. GDP per capita is also expected to rise steadily over the same period (IMF, 2019). This should lead to an increase in spending power for the local consumer.
