Project background

The site for the new waterfront complex at Gateshead Quays is being hailed as one, if not the most, truly exciting conference and events settings in the UK. Located directly opposite the Gateshead Millennium Bridge and at the heart of Newcastle Gateshead Quayside, the scheme will stand shoulder to shoulder with the iconic Sage Gateshead and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art while being minutes from Newcastle City Centre.

The site is well supported by transport links with regional, national and international connectivity through Newcastle Central Station and Newcastle International Airport. The scheme includes a 12,500-capacity arena, conference and exhibition centre, operated by renowned venue management group SMG Europe, two hotels and leisure/retail space.

It’s expected to add over 1,000 jobs and 29 million GBP Gross Valued Added (GVA) per annum to the regional economy and is unique in the fact that it benefits from the ability to connect directly to a low carbon district energy network on site.

This development is the missing piece to complement the suite of visionary waterfront developments already in place.

The conference facility will attract international audiences to the UK, aligned to the investment and research strengths of North East England, and UK government’s industrial strategy, linked to an exciting 12,500 people capacity arena and the world class Sage centre for music.

The project promoters for this site are Ask Real Estate and PATRIZIA UK who have formed a joint venture. Together they bring a well-established and experienced design and build team with a proven track record of delivering similar size schemes.

This project is also supported by the North East Local Enterprise Partnership with Gateshead Council providing a lease guarantee for the investment income and is also responsible for planning. Gateshead Quays is located within The Northern Powerhouse area.
