Description
Since the introduction of the Climate Protection Act in 2021, there have been clear climate protection targets for all areas of life with the overarching goal of climate neutrality by 2045. Germany's peatlands will make an important contribution to climate neutrality. By rewetting these areas, greenhouse gas emissions caused by the drainage of peat soils can be saved.
caused by the drainage of peatlands. In order to implement the Climate Action Plan 2050 in Germany, peatlands must also be managed wet in the long term.
This is the aim of the 10-year project funded by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL): "Management and biomass utilization of wet fens: Network of model and demonstration projects in peatland regions of Brandenburg", or "WetNetBB" for short. The State Office for the Environment (LfU) is a joint partner for the state of Brandenburg alongside the
German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE) and the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) e. V. under the leadership of the Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Research and Bioeconomy (ATB). The WetNetBB project is intended to act as a catalyst for a large-scale transformation to sustainable peatland use by taking up and bringing together the developments of various preliminary work on rewetting in Brandenburg, realizing peatland-preserving water levels on typical sites, implementing and demonstrating exemplary methods for land management and biomass use and thus radiating beyond the project areas and regions. The overall aim of the project is to create a network of model and demonstration projects for the use of wet fens with representative fen areas, biomass utilization paths and relevant stakeholders in Brandenburg. The area includes areas in the Spreewald, the Rhinluch, the Randowbruch, the Uckermark and the Middle Havel.
the Middle Havel.
Sub-project 2, for which the LfU is responsible, includes the establishment of the areas, the monitoring and support of agricultural enterprises in the conversion of management and utilization, area hydrology, planning services for obtaining water law permits,
rewetting, active steps to increase biodiversity and accompanying scientific research to increase biodiversity on demonstration areas in the project regions mentioned.
The WetNetBB project is intended to act as a catalyst for a large-scale transformation to sustainable, peatland-friendly peatland use. The overall aim of the project is to create a network of model and demonstration projects for the use of wet fens with representative peatland areas,
biomass utilization paths and relevant stakeholders in Brandenburg. The aim is to achieve a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions with simultaneous economic use and a high level of acceptance.
