It is part of the portfolio of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety. The tasks of the office are primarily the scientific support of the federal government, the enforcement of environmental laws and the information of the public on environmental protection.The Federal Environment Agency, headquartered in Dessau, is spread over six major locations throughout Germany, including four laboratory sites and two office locations. One site is located at Schichauweg 58 in Berlin-Marienfelde (property of the Bundesanstalt für Immobilienaufgaben - BImA) and consists of eight buildings. These were constructed in a period from 1978 to 2013.The so-called "New Laboratory Building" (NLS) of the Federal Environment Agency at Schichauweg 58 in Berlin-Marienfelde is an existing laboratory building, which was planned by the architects Rave and Partner and constructed in 1991-1992. The building is used as a laboratory building with the associated offices. The building is an approximately 50 m long and 22 m wide 5-storey structure. The gross floor area (GFA) over all floors is approx. 5,400 m². Structurally, the building consists of an inner bracing core and the outer zones are of skeleton construction. Only the staircases on the north and south sides have fire-resistant walls.The new laboratory building is to be renovated in sections during ongoing operation.A short-term elimination of various fire protection deficiencies is required.The fire protection deficiencies were identified in a fire prevention inspection.
