The state of Rhineland-Palatinate (RLP) has a large number of grassland biotope types that are important for nature conservation. Grassland biotopes are among the most species-rich biotope types in Central Europe and are therefore of great importance for the preservation of biological diversity and thus also for the achievement of state-wide goals such as the biodiversity strategy of Rhineland-Palatinate.Therefore, many of the biotopes are legally protected according to § 30 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act (BNatSchG) (= §30 biotope types). Many of them are also habitat types according to Annex I of the Habitats Directive (FFH-LRT). Due to the amendment of the Rhineland-Palatinate Nature Conservation Act (LNatSchG RLP of 6 October 2015), in addition to the §30 biotope types of the BNatschG, Rhineland-Palatinate also placed Lean lowland meadows, mountain meadows and rough pastures under special legal protection (= §15 biotope types).The Rhineland-Palatinate grassland mapping is the state-wide recording of these species-rich grassland biotopes protected by § 30 BNatSchG, §15 LNatSchG RLP as well as by the FFH Directive and is part of the state-wide biotope register.
