Description

The aim of the commission is to contribute to expanding knowledge about the economic effects of climate change on the German economy. The consequential costs, i.e. the costs of climate damage caused by extreme weather events as well as by the gradual progress of climate change (damage costs) and the costs of precautionary adaptation measures (adaptation costs) that will be incurred by the German economy must be considered systematically and comprehensively. The definition of the damage function (including damage and adaptation costs) is a central task. With regard to the cost estimates of climate damage, the mandate will include both a retrospective (ex-post) analysis of the economic damage costs of an extreme weather event in Germany and a forward-looking (ex-ante) investigation of climate-related economic damage and adaptation costs based on three different IPCC scenarios and taking into account the current state of research.

Within the framework of project workshops, selected actors will be networked and experiences with cost estimates of climate change impacts will be discussed. An accompanying review process serves to ensure a high professional standard in the implementation of the project. Furthermore, the results obtained are to be prepared for communication and public relations work in a way that is appropriate for the target group.
