The existing infrastructure in the area north of Karlsruhe represents a major bottleneck in the German rail network. In order to do justice to the forecast growth in rail traffic, an increase in capacity is to be achieved by creating an extension and new line (ABS/NBS) Mannheim - Karlsruhe by means of two new tracks. The aim of this feasibility study is to develop solutions for the additional line capacities required. At the same time, technical feasibility must be accompanied by the lowest possible resistance from an environmental and spatial planning point of view. A preferential variant developing from this is to be introduced into a regional planning procedure as an application road. The interim and final results of the train path search and the technical feasibility study should be presented continuously, transparently and in a manner appropriate to the addressees, as a rule to public participation organised by DB Netz AG. The study area for the search for train paths relates to the Mannheim Rbf to Karlsruhe area. Both an expansion of the existing infrastructure as well as a new construction line must be integrated into the analysis of the route finding and technical feasibility. Furthermore, in the sense of holistic planning, possible dependencies and framework conditions must be taken into account through further new construction and expansion projects in adjacent areas. The time required for these initial planning services until the formal initiation of a regional planning procedure is estimated at approximately 3 years from the start of the service.
