The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (AG) is planning to acquire a firewall for the internal DMZ and the server networks. The motivation is to implement the principle of a 2-stage firewall to the perimeter. When selecting the internal firewall, the AG must take into account the general conditions from the firewall landscape already in operation. The AG follows the 2 manufacturer principle in the 2 steps for perimeter safety. The inner firewall should not be from the same manufacturer as the outer one. A further criterion for product selection is employee training for firewall support. The few colleagues for the firewall administration should be well versed with 2 manufacturers and thus also only 2 product lines. Thus the AG has already committed itself to the security gateways of Fortinet in its search for a Next Generation Firewall. In view of the planned duration of at least 4 years, it should be a current Fortigate firewall of the E series. The Fortigate models of the D series have been on the market for at least one year and longer. For the segmentation of the server networks the AG depends on 40G and better in speed. The AG is thus oriented towards the Fortigate 3960E firewall for zoning server networks.
