Description

British Council Jamaica, through its school programme, has successfully positioned itself as one of the main driving forces behind science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) education in Jamaica.

It has sought to create greater opportunity for exchange between Jamaica and the UK through leveraging the British Council’s expertise in STEAM education.

The:

  • implementation of the national STEAM forum
  • Commonwealth Connections UK in 2022 project
  • commissioning of the National STEAM Education Report Jamaica
  • UK STEAM study tour between 2021/22 and 2022/23

created meaningful dialogue between Jamaica and the UK to envision and collaborate on how to grow and reform the school system in Jamaica in a meaningful way. These initiatives have directly responded to the priorities of the government of Jamaica (GoJ) in contributing to the development of a STEAM ecosystem by connecting policy makers, teachers, and young people to broaden their experiences.

The next step is to continue working on developing the STEAM ecosystem in Jamaica throughout 2023/24 under our STEAM Education Programme in Jamaica by leveraging the expertise of the UK as a sector expert.

This project aims to support the GoJ to further develop the STEAM Ecosystem in Jamaica, as committed under our 5 year memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Education and Youth (MOEY) and the National Education Trust (NET), signed in May 2023. The British council in Jamaica school pilot programme this year will be to:

• improve access to over 1,500 young people in computational thinking abilities. This means they can access the STEAM ecosystem in Jamaica, strengthening creativity and innovation abilities in young people

• support the development of the STEAM ecosystem in Jamaica by delivering capacity building training for 300 teachers, infusing computational thinking pedagogy applied to entrepreneurship and creativity throughout the national standards curriculum, working with the Ministry of Education (MoE)

• conceptualise a national STEAM policy, that will guide the development of a STEAM ecosystem, through a sustainable approach connecting the various actors at each education, community, and societal levels

• facilitate dialogue between STEAM stakeholders in Jamaica, through workshops and a two-day symposium, to explore the way forward for developing the STEAM ecosystem

This project is being implemented under the wider ‘Future of Creativity’ programme. This brings together the diverse voices of the UK and the Caribbean to imagine the future of arts and education relations between the two cultures through a comprehensive portfolio of activities over the course of 2023. The programme is estimated to reach 20,000 people.
