Description

The integrated comprehensive school "Johann Wolfgang von Goethe" in Wismar consists of several building parts, which were originally part of the former monastery complex of the Dominican monastery "Schwarzes Kloster" or were newly built in its place. The multi-part school building, including the adjacent building parts of the "Black Monastery", is listed as an individual monument under the address "Bei der Klosterkirche 8". The choir of the former monastery church has been preserved in its essential structural components and was functionally integrated into the school building in 1878-80. It is a one-nave, three-bay building with an irregular 5/8 choir ending. The height of the sacral church room was divided horizontally into two floors by the installation of a wooden beam ceiling. The lower storey was converted into a gymnasium, the upper storey into an assembly hall. The school main building is the school building, which was newly constructed in 1880 and which adjoins the choir to the west instead of the former nave. The north and west facades are equipped with various decorative and structuring elements, some of which are neo-Gothic. They are the representative image of the public street space. During the Second World War the building complex was severely damaged in two places. A bomb hit the main building and completely destroyed the area between the middle risalit (main entrance) and the gymnasium entrance on all floors. Another hit damaged the eastern facade of the staircase in the outbuilding and the adjacent classroom axis north of the staircase. Both areas were restored after the war around 1 949/50. In the process, the historical façade ornamentation was simplified and the construction of ceilings and the staircase façade was partially altered.
