Australia - Army Research Scheme 2022

Description

The Australian Army Research Centre is seeking expression of interest from service providers to undertake paid research on topics that will inform future land force development and modernisation. The research outcomes sought are either articles (4,000 to 6,000 words) or stand-alone papers (up to 20,000 words). Army will facilitate publication of research in the first instance in either the Australian Army Journal or the Army Research Papers Series. Topical areas of current research interest to Army include:
 
Question 1: How can land power achieve strategic deterrence in a coalition or self-reliance setting? What are the contributions that land forces can make to enhance Australia’s capacity to deter aggression?
 
Question 2: Is the planned rate of implementation for transformational changes to the ADF (force expansion, higher states of preparedness, stronger deterrence, and greater self-reliance) at a pace sufficient for the ADF to respond to further deterioration in the strategic environment? 
 
Question 3: How, and in which ways, might the current strategic environment impact on Army’s preparedness, responsiveness and regional capacity building?
 
Question 4: How should the ADF, or the Army, prepare itself to scale or adjust its posture to offset unforeseen threats or respond to unknown contingencies? 
 
Question 5: What future land power capabilities, relationships and process may be best pursued through AUKUS to advance and secure Australia’s national interests?
 
Question 6: What can Army learn from the Russian-Ukraine conflict (2014-today), and how could this impact Army’s modernisation efforts?   
 
Question 7: What are the characteristics of, and considerations relevant to, the relationship between the ADF, or Army, and the broader Australian community? What are the opportunities or challenges that will affect this relationship over the next decade?
 
Expression of Interest for 2022 are now open. The application package consists of a response form from interested service providers to submit their topic, a short synopsis, a short explanation on how this will inform Army in regards the question and background on the service provider and proposed researchers.
 
Selected Expressions of Interest will be invited to submit a detailed and costed proposal.
 
The upper limit for funding individual proposals through the Army Research Scheme is $80,000 (GST-incl).
